The sound of the door to her flat being unlocked startled Mimi awake. Rubbing her eyes, she opened it and stepped back, her mouth agape. âOh my. What happened to you, Kees?â
Then she saw Hetty standing behind him, covered in blood head to toe. âWhere did you go?â the astonished Mimi asked, glancing toward Hettyâs empty bed as she closed the door behind her friends. âI didnât hear you leave.â
âTurn around, Kees,â Hetty ordered to give her privacy while she removed her blood-stained clothes before throwing them in the waste basket. âWe need to sink our clothes in the river,â said Hetty as she entered the bathroom. âGet out of that bloody outfit while I have a shower.â
Kees did as he was told while Mimi faced the wall. âDo you have something to drink?â he asked, with a hint of desperation in his voice as he wrapped a towel around his waist.
âWe have some whiskey,â said Mimi, who went to the kitchen and returned with the half-empty bottle that she and Hetty had shared earlier. âIs that Hessâs blood?â
Hetty returned in her bathrobe, using a towel to dry her hair.
Kees sat down heavily in the only chair, staring blankly at the whiskey bottle. âWhat have we done?â He ran a hand through his hair. âWe just killed a German officer in cold blood. There will be reprisals.â
âWe need to run!â Mimi said urgently.
Hetty turned calmly toward Kees. âYouâd better take a shower.â
He stood up with a dazed expression as Hetty handed him a fresh towel from a shelf in the bathroom. âWash your hair; itâs caked with blood.â
Then she went to the closet and gathered a pair of pants and a work shirt. âTry these on. Karl left them here before the war.â
Kees sat down on Mariaâs bed. âI need a minute.â He put Mariaâs pillow against his face and inhaled. âI can smell her, like sheâs still here.â
âYou promised not to kill him,â said Mimi, huddled on her bed.
âI wasnât going to,â said Kees, lighting a cigarette. âThen Hess said something terrible about Maria, and I lost my head. Still, if Hetty hadnât saved me, Iâd be dead right now.â
âWhat were you thinking, Hetty?â said Mimi. âYou shouldnât have left without telling me.â
âWould you have let me go?â asked Hetty.
âThanks to you, the Gestapo will be crawling around Leiden like ants looking for us,â said Mimi, her voice agitated.
âHe needed killing,â Hetty said sharply, plucking the cigarette from Keesâs mouth. She took a deep drag and coughed.
âYouâre wrong. We would all be safer if you two had left Hess alone,â said Mimi, pacing the floor. âAnd what about the night Gerhardt killed Brecht? You didnât say he needed killing.â
âI was wrong about Brecht but not about Hess,â said Hetty, smoking the cigarette in rapid puffs. âWe need to stay focused on whatâs important. I should not have asked Maria to take my place on yesterdayâs assignment just because I wanted to be with Pier. She died while I was having a meaningless fuck.
